Q-Cells® Capabilities
Initial Q-Cell® studies and pre-clinical testing have revealed many unique and promising capabilities: When injected into myelin-defective models, Q-Cells differentiate into both types of glia: Oligodendrocytes (stained in green) and Astrocytes (stained in red).
- In models of human disease that involve defective myelination, Q-Cells® provide robust production of normal myelin.
- In these models, Q-Cells® injected into the central nervous system know what to do. They replicate for a limited time, migrate and differentiate normally into mature glial cells:
- Oligodendrocytes that produce the insulating myelin sheath on neurons, and
- Astrocytes that produce important growth factors and provide trophic support to oligodendrocytes and neurons.
- By producing these two types of mature glial cells, Q-Cells® efficiently produce normal myelin.
- Q-Cells® produce growth factors that, in addition to supporting myelination, may also lead to treatments for other diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease) and Parkinson's Disease.
- Q-Cells® can be used as drug screening tools to identify other potential pharmaceutical products.
